Vitamin C or ascorbic acid
Vitamin C was discovered in the late 1920s by Albert Szent-Györgyi. He identified an unknown substance in the adrenal glands, determined its composition, and named it ascorbic acid. (Ascorbic acid = “anti-scorbutic”, meaning against scurvy.)
Later, he also discovered how to produce this organic acid in large quantities. (Organic compounds are generally considered carbon-containing compounds. All vitamins fall into this category, containing carbon–carbon and/or carbon–hydrogen bonds.)
This is a molecule with a specific structure—whether extracted from fruit, vegetables, or produced in a laboratory, it is always the same compound.
Szent-Györgyi once said that ascorbic acid should be sold in kilogram packages on store shelves. Ever since, there has been ongoing debate about the recommended daily intake of vitamin C. Is it 60 mg? Or 500 mg? Or perhaps 1000 mg? Just a simple example: if a 1 kg guinea pig needs 30 mg of vitamin C supplementation daily in addition to vegetables and fruit, it’s easy to calculate how much vitamin C a 60 kg human might need. Isn’t it?
