Chromium is a mineral that is present in small amounts in the human body. Its role is mainly important in carbohydrate metabolism, as it promotes the action of insulin. In its deficiency, glucose tolerance is reduced and the risk of developing atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease is increased. The reason for this is that chromium is also involved in the metabolism of cholesterol and blood lipids.

The carbohydrate content of the food we eat is broken down into sugar, which is released into the bloodstream. In order for the sugar to be transported from the bloodstream to the cells that need energy ( or even stored as glycogen), insulin is needed. The hormone insulin (produced by beta cells in the pancreas) allows the cells to take up sugar.

Chromium increases the sensitivity of insulin receptors, thereby improving insulin sensitivity and helping to maintain normal blood glucose levels in the body. In support of this, several studies have concluded that chromium can improve type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance.

Its use can be beneficial for people with carbohydrate metabolism disorders, but dieters can also profit from its beneficial effects. This is due to its positive effects on blood sugar and insulin regulation, as mentioned above. It is no coincidence that chromium is found as an ingredient in many fat burners.
